Here's My Broken Hallelujah

I can barely stand right now.
Everything is crashing down,
And I wonder where You are.

I try to find the words to pray.
I don't always know what to say,
But You're the one that can hear my heart.

Even though I don't know what your plan is,
I know You make beauty from these ashes.

I've seen joy and I've seen pain.
On my knees, I call Your name.
Here's my broken hallelujah.

With nothing left to hold onto,
I raise these empty hands to You.
Here's my broken hallelujah.

You know the things that have brought me here.
You know the story of every tear.
‘Cause You've been here from the very start.

When all is taken away, don't let my heart be changed.
Let me always sing Hallelujah
When I feel afraid, don't let my hope be erased

Let me always sing Hallelujah.
Let me always sing Hallelujah.

I will always sing
I will always sing
Here's my broken hallelujah.

I'm feelin' 22

So many songs on Taylor's new album are fun. That's the best way I can describe them. But of them all, when I want to goof off and dance around my house, my go-to song on RED is definitely "22". I can't help but feel carefree as I jump around like a fool or belt it out in the middle of rush hour traffic. I'm glad she has as great of a time in this video as I do when I listen to the song.

Sometimes you've just got to act your age. And a lot of times, that actually means giving yourself and break and simply enjoying life!

"Need You Now," by Plumb

Well, everybody's got a story to tell
And everybody's got a wound to be healed
I want to believe there's beauty here
'Cause oh I get so tired of holding on
I can't let go, I can't move on
I want to believe there's meaning here

How many times have you heard me cry out
"God please take this"?
How many times have you given me strength to
Just keep breathing?
Oh, I need you
God, I need you now.

Standing on a road I didn't plan
Wondering how I got to where I am
I'm trying to hear that still small voice
I'm trying to hear above the noise

How many times have you heard me cry out
"God please take this"?
How many times have you given me strength to
Just keep breathing?
Oh, I need you
God, I need you now.

Oh I walk, Oh I walk through the shadows
And I, I am so afraid
Please stay, please stay right beside me
With every single step I take

How many times have you heard me cry out?
And how many times have you given me strength?

How many times have you heard me cry out
"God please take this"?
How many times have you given me strength to
Just keep breathing?
Oh, I need you
God, I need you now.

I need you now
Oh, I need you
God, I need you now
I need you now
I need you now

One Week More

Ohmygoodness, you guys!!!

So, you know how I have a tendency to get kind of obsessed with a few things? (What me? Never!) Well, my newest obsession has become Les Miserables. And people, seriously, it should become your latest obsession, too!

Mere months ago, I didn't know anything about Les Mis more than the fact that it's a "fancy" musical which I'll probably never encounter. Pssh. How naive I was! Little did I know that it is the most epic story in history (besides the story of Christ)!

A good friend of mine introduced me to the trailer, and the rest is history. Here, let me do the honors of paying it forward to you. Feast your eyes on this!

Shyeah! Toldja so! Based on those two and a half minutes, I decided that it looked absolutely monumental. Since then, I've been pouring over everything I can get my hands on through the trusty world wide web. Brad and I have listened to the soundtrack, I've watched the 25th Anniversary Concert, and I have seen every clip that the film has posted on youtube. It's official. I'm obsessed.

From my limited understanding of the history, Victor Hugo's 1862 novel about the life of a convict (and those surrounding him) during a French Revolution and spotlighting social injustices of the time has inspired many film adaptations as well as the musical that's been running here and in London since the 80's. But I'm pretty sure that this is the first film to be based on the musical which is based on the book. And they're doing their best to bring the authenticity of Broadway to our screens. The director insisted that every take be sung live rather than prerecorded and lip synced during shooting.

I can't get over how incredibly amazing this film will be. The more I learn about it, the more excited I become. The story! The actors! The voices! You better believe that Brad and I have already purchased our tickets for Christmas morning, opening day. I can't wait! (You can also count down the days with this Les Mis advent calendar!)

One Day Week More! I can already hear the people sing!

I Knew You Were Trouble.

Yesterday, on her 23rd birthday, Taylor Swift released her 23rd video. This one is for her new single off her Red album for "I Knew You Were Trouble." This is one of my favorite songs on the record, and even more importantly, it's Brad's favorite one! I'm not going to admit how many times the two of us have belted it out in the car or danced to the dubset beat in our kitchen.

The song is unlike anything she's ever done before. She has said that she wanted the music to sound like the feeling experienced in the chaotic relationship that inspired it. I'm not surprised that she also ventured into uncharted territory with the video that accompanies it. (It's also fun to hear her perspective on it all...)

It's taking me a bit to get used to the "new, more mature" Taylor, but I actually really like it. I'm not sure how it will fit into young girls' lives, but TSwiz is 23 now, and she deserves to grow up in her artistry a little bit. I, for one, am loving following her journey!

"Begin Again"

Right after the release of "Red," Taylor delivered another gift to us! Here's her new video for the final track on her album, "Begin Again."

This is one of my favorites of the new set of songs. It's both about recovering from a heartbreak and the hope of a new relationship. It's a great example of the "old Swift," which shares the record with the "new Swift's" playful, dancey, pop-y songs. Of course, I enjoy both versions of her storytelling, but it's always nice to experience some of the fundamental reasons I fell in love with her in the first place with the slow, romantic ballads.

Also, this video makes me want to visit Paris, s’il vous plaît.

RED

Happy RED Day! Yahoo!!! Today is such a great day! Taylor's new album if finally released!

The iTunes album was released at midnight, and I couldn't help but download it ASAP. Thanks to some sneaky timezone tricks, I was able to get it earlier! I listened to the whole album through once before bed, then again as I fell asleep. I love it already!

But that didn't stop me from heading to Target right as it opened to purchase their deluxe edition with six additional bonus tracks! I want all the Taylor I can get! And I wasn't the only one there bright and early snagging my very own hardy copy of her fourth album. (Nor was I the only one posing for a picture near the already-emptying front display!) I had to wait in line to grab my 2-disc album.

Two years ago, for the Speak Now release, I was just barely able to refrain from purchasing a t-shirt that was displayed near the CDs. This year, not so much. That cute grey one was too tempting! And those Target employees sure know how to sing a siren's song! Of course, I couldn't wear it today. Today, RED Day, only my red shirt, red jewelry, and red lips would do! Yay for Taylor Holidays!

I've already listened to the album multiple times. I can't quite decide which is my favorite song. Maybe it's the big sound of "State of Grace." Maybe one the ballads like "All Too Well" or "Sad Beautiful Tragic" or "Begin Again." Or one of the duets like "The Last Time" with Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody or "Everything Has Changed" with my British fave, Ed Sheeran. Or the fun, dancey ones like "22" or "I Knew You Were Trouble." Yeah, obviously I can't make up my mind, yet. So far, I'm not wanting to skip over any of them, including the six bonus ones from Target, and that's a good sign!

I love hearing Taylor's perspective of each song:

This album is most certainly the most eclectic one TSwiz has compiled. I love how her voice adapts to every style and genre she fearlessly approaches. I can't wait to memorize every word to every song and belt them out in my car! I gotta go! It's time to listen again!

Have you listened to it yet? Did you buy the iTunes version or the hard copy? Do you pour over the lyrics like I do? What's your favorite song? Do you like hearing some of Tay's new sounds?

PS. Finding the hidden messages within the lyrics in her liner notes was just as fun this time as it was the three times before! Now, how to determine the subject of each song?? Let the speculating begin!

"Meant to be Together" by Emily Cowan

My best friend is famous!! Or at least she is bound to be after this!

Emily Cowan just released her first official music video!

Y'all, get ready, 'cause it's awesome!

Okay, right? What'd I tell you? It's amazing! EEEEEE!! I'm just so excited for her! (And for me! Yahoo for famous best friends!!)

Taylor's Versatile Live Performances

TSwift had to live performances back-to-back last week. Thursday night, she closed out the MTV VMAs with a live version of her fun video for "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." It was quite a grand finale for the awards show. She had a lot of fun with the performance, and the crowd seemed to enjoy belting out the earworm chorus.

Then, the following night, she performed her second single from her upcoming album, "Red" at the Stand Up To Cancer benefit event. The song is titled "Ronan," and it was written for a 4-year-old boy by the same name who recently passed away after his battle with Cancer. She was inspired to pen the song after reading a blog from Ronan's mother, who is credited as being a co-songwriter on the single. It's so beautiful and moving that it literally made me cry, so beware. If you feel so inclined to purchase the song on iTunes, you'll be supporting a great cause, becaues all of the proceeds are going to help fight cancer.

She is such a versatile songwriter. I can't believe she can go from a fun, quirky performance like "WANEGBT" on one night, and then switch to such an emotional, moving performance like "Ronan" the very next evening. America just can't ever know what to expect from her. I think we can definitely be sure that her fourth album will be very eclectic and different. I can't wait to experience every story and emotion she'll capture on it. I also can't stop tearing up at "Ronan."

Emily Cowan Rocks

I guess you could say I'm awesome by association. My best friend is a super talented singer/songwriter! No, not that best friend (although her, too). My real best friend! Emily is amazing, y'all! After years of her holding the title of BFF, I finally got to watch her perform last week! And believe me, she was as incredible as I knew she would be. Her voice! Her lyrics! Her music! Oh, I was one very proud friend hoopin' and hollerin' and snappin' pictures in the front row!

Charlie is so used to being near mommy around the house when she practices, that the sweet toddler ran on up to the stage in front of everybody to help out like usual! Don't worry, Charles was on hand to make sure it didn't get wild. I loved that it was a family affair! (Plus, Charles was already doing all of the sound like a pro, since being an audio engineer is kind of his day job.)

However, by the end of the set, wild is exactly what it got! Layla wasn't going to let her BFF dance up there without her! So, after much insistence on the girls' parts, it finally became the dance party they had been waiting for!

I know that you would absolutely love Emily's music, too. Believe me. That's not just a best friend talking, either. That's coming from just a regular ol' enjoyer of music! Also, I think you'd totally dig The Well Coffeehouse, where she performed. Learn all about that awesome non-profit organization (of which we know the founders!) here or here. If you're in the Nashville area, stop by for some delicious brew that spreads love all the way around the world!

Security Blankets

I have some security blankets. There, I said it.

Like sweet Linus from Peanuts, sometimes I just need a little something to make me feel safe and "at home" again when the world is spinning too fast for my liking. For me, those blankets aren't necessarily physical objects that I clutch in my hand (anymore -my childhood teddy bear has officially taken up residence in the guest room-), but have evolved into forms of entertainment that allow me to escape my world and all of the confusion, stress, drama, apprehension of the future, and every other bad feeling or emotion that it may contain. Generally, any good album, film, or book (series) can help temporarily distract me from my stressers, but sometimes I need my go-to security blankets to slow the world back down when I can't seem to get a firm grip on anything. Lately, my life has hosted its fair share of frustrations and chaos, and as a result, I've been venturing back more and more to my safe places looking for that comfort and familiarity that they provide.

Currently (this minute), the biggest Bad in my life is my perceived loss of control and sense of self. I feel like I've become a slave to (in)fertility and her many cumbersome treatments. Each day/week largely consists of a calculated diet, an exercise regimen, doctor visits or calls, insurance questions, acupuncture sessions, checking my temperature, peeing on sticks, swallowing various forms of medication, enduring negative side effects, monitoring any changes in any symptoms in my body and mind, attempting to understand everything, trying to not expect anything, making all efforts to avoid looking into the future all the while hoping and longing for that unsure future. Basically, it feels like every minute of my life is determined for me. I'm trying to do what I'm told to do by people whom I trust and respect, and do all of those things with only positive thoughts and emotions without recognizing the dark, misting raincloud that seems to hover over my whole world. I strive to meet those requirements with very few freedoms or choices of my own. Needless to say, I frequently find myself grasping for a sense of control and familiarity. Enter my metaphorical security blankets.

If I've simply had a bad day and I only want to unwind on my way home from work or while I'm making my evening salad for dinner, I'll turn to my "afghan" security blanket: my best friend, Taylor Swift. She and I have such a great relationship. We just get each other. So, as I drive away from my bad day, I blast her music, belt out every single word to each song, dance around the kitchen, and gladly enter into Taylor's world and forget my own. Her music is my afghan, because it's pretty and small and easily accessible.

If a 45-minute commuter concert isn't quite cutting it and I need a full evening away from my own life, then I'll crash on the couch and pop in one of my go-to DVDs. I love Dirty Dancing and Moulin Rouge! both so incredibly much for so many very specific reasons that I won't necessarily go into full detail right now. (The love! The dancing! The songs! The costumes! The theatricality! The woman-is-worth-more-than-she-ever-thought-before!)

But these two films uniquely qualify as security blankets because of my personal history with them. In college, I would watch either of them as I studied, did homework, or wrote term papers. At the time, they provided a perfect distraction; one that would keep me from hearing the chatter in the hallway and wanting to join, but didn't demand my full attention because I knew them by heart. Music would beg me to sing along, and regular television programs would urge me to see how they ended. But Dirty Dancing and Moulin Rouge! were perfectly there for me. I could tune them out when I needed to focus, and I could turn around and join in the storyline at anytime that I needed a mental break from the school work.

From 2002 - 2006, my favorite two movies were my college companions. Now, they serve a new role as a couple of my "fleece throw" security blankets. When I sit down and watch one of them, the familiarity of the story lines, the song lyrics, the memories attached to different scenes all make my heart calm down from its now-typically quickened pace. In this other world, I know what's going to happen. I know how each person is going to react. I know what they're going to say, and I can recite the lines right alongside them in unison. I don't have to wonder or try to make sense of anything or be anxious with a ton of apprehensions looming in my mind. I can just rest in the safe place that their love and their stories provide and completely escape the heaviness of my own life for an evening. Since these act as fleece throws in my life, I keep them readily handy, pull them up to my chin, and snuggle up under the comfort they provide.

However, the Big Daddy of all Safe Places is Hogwarts. When I need more than one night "off" from my brain, when my emotional muscles grow too weak to carry the weight of it all anymore, I run into the arms of JK Rowling's magical world of Harry Potter. This is my most sufficient way to escape. It's a long-term relief with the fantasy lasting weeks or months or however long I want it to, but it only requires short-term commitments of reading at a time. I can go back there, whenever I choose, for merely a few minutes if I simply need a break to clear my head, or I can go back there for hours on end if I need to better forget all of the responsibilities and burdens I'm hauling.

I can experience Harry's journey with him all over again from start to finish. Alongside this boy wizard, I can realize that I, too, am capable of great things I never knew possible, learn of magical places and creatures, meet fantastic characters and form strong, life-long relationships, and eventually understand that I am destined to fulfil a calling and a purpose that no one else is equipped to do. Through Harry, I can leave all of my troubles behind and soar with him on the backs of thestrals and dragons and finally, after much struggle, defeat the bad guy once and for all. For the moments that I am entered into Hogwarts, my life is free and light and fun and magical. And familiar. This book series is my biggest, softest, comfiest, covers-the-whole-bed security blanket of them all.

Recently, I purchased and downloaded all seven books in electronic form. I can't even describe how wonderful and therapeutic that was for me. Just knowing that I had the entire series on hand at all times on my kindle or my iPhone literally sent a sense of physical calm and relief through my body. (Yes. I may be crazy.) What those e-books provided me was a completely accessible security blanket any time I might need it. Just having the blanket present actually created a safe place in itself. Any time life gets too crazy or chaotic or confusing or scary or overwhelming, I can whip out one of my electronic devices and quickly retreat into the fantasy world. It helps me not be afraid of what's to come. I can handle the coming days and weeks and months (and years?), because I know that the very moment it all gets to be too much for me to take, I can dive into the safety of Hogwarts. What an amazing resource a security blanket can be.

Do you have a "security blanket?" Where is your safe place to escape when the real world gets too much? And have the forms which your security blankets take morphed over time as you've gotten older?

Safe and Sound

There are three things I'm currently obsessed with. Taylor Swift is, of course, one of them. The other two you may not know about: The Civil Wars and The Hunger Games trilogy. Seriously, if you've never listened to The Civil Wars, do it. And if you've never read The Hunger Games, do it. You'll thank me for both.

Back in December, I was thrilled when Taylor announced that she was collaborating with The Civil Wars on a new song. (Holla!) Adding to the excitment, the song was going to be for the first movie adaptation of my new favorite book series! And finally, yesterday, (only one day after she brought home two new Grammy awards) she released the video for one of the best songs she's ever done. Prepare to see and hear Taylor like never before. Behold!

What do you think? I absolutely love it. I have to be honest, though, when I first heard they were collaborating, I had a couple doubts of how well Taylor could keep up with the haunting melodies of The Civil Wars, but her voice in this song is more beautiful than ever. And visually, the video matches the tone and feel of the book series perfectly. This gives me high hopes for the film's approach to the material, as well.

Taylor meets The Civil Wars meets The Hunger Games? Yes, please!

Taylor's Big Announcement

Taylor is releasing a Live Album and DVD of her Speak Now tour! Yea!! Now, I get to relive the concert over and over again! And for those of you who don't also get the awesome opportunity to go to her show, you will still get the chance to watch her performance and see how awesome it is for yourself!

Yea! I'm so excited!! And that video was taken last weekend in Nashville!! Depending on which night, there's a good chance I'm one of those screaming fans you hear! Yahoo!!!

An Enchanting Evening

I got so see Taylor Swift perform live! In person! I had been waiting over seven months since I won the tickets on the radio, and the night finally arrived for us to go to her concert! Oh, you better believe I came prepared with a nice, sparkly poster!

Brad was a great sport. He not only allowed me to let my crazy soar, but he also stood up with me for the entire show, and even sang along with the songs that he knew.

After waiting through two opening acts, one of which was decent, and the other of which was awesome (Needtobreathe), Taylor finally rose up through the stage floor amongst fog and thousands of screams and cheers.

Her show is so incredible! Just completely awesome. She is such an amazing entertainer! The show seemed like a Broadway musical that she was singing the soundtrack to. Nearly every song had a different costume and a different set with her, the band mates, and lots of dancers acting out each story. There was so much going on that I didn't even know where to look at times. She even had aerialists doing stunts from the ceiling at one point! And Taylor played so many different instruments, including multiple guitars, a banjo, a ukulele, and a piano.

She looked like she was having a great time on stage, and talked about how nice it was to be "back home" in Nashville. She did such a fantastic job of engaging the crowd, and seemed to genuinely appreciate the love and applause from everybody. She humbly thanked us for "choosing to hang out with her" on a Friday night, and said "I love you" to us fans multiple times. I'm pretty sure she was mostly talking directly to me, though.

One thing is for sure about TSwift: she definitely connects with her fans. There's a whole segment of her show that she performs from the back of the auditorium, in an effort to make the "worst seats in the house, the best seats for a while." She walks through the crowd on the floor to get to the small rear stage, shaking hands, hugging fans, and even kissing children on the cheek the whole way there and back.

At the base of the slowly spinning tree (enabling everybody to get a great view), she sings an acoustic set. It was at this point that Brad leaned over to me and said, "Okay. Seriously, she's good. That girl can sing." {In your face, mean critics! Brad Mehaffey says she's the real deal!} She also uses this opportunity in the evening to sing a location-specific song. For our show, she chose to sing David Mead's "Going back to Nashville." Very fitting, huh?

She performs the final song of the evening, her classic "Love Song," in a beautiful ball gown from a floating balcony as she moves around the arena, soaring above the crowd and hovering close to all of the higher seats.

Seriously, she loves her fans so much that she even has crew members set out to invite about thirty random people in the crowd to join her from the T-Party after the show (T for Taylor) where they hang out with her and the band in their "living room," and eat pizza, drink soda, play air hockey, take pictures together and get autographs. A friend of mine and her young daughter actually got to go! I would have loved to have been picked, but I still had a great time in the crowd just watching the show! Besides, I'm pretty sure she looked right at me and my sign when she was sitting under the tree. So, we're basically officially best friends now.

I walked into the concert already completely loving Taylor Swift. But, honestly, I walked out just absolutely adoring her. She's so sweet, and funny, and kind, and humble, and relatable, and genuine, and talented, and outgoing, and pretty, and just plain wonderful. I still can't believe I was so blessed to win tickets. What a sparkling night. ♥

Sparks Fly

Taylor just released the video for her most recent single, Sparks Fly. Get ready for a prime seat to her show!

Sparks Fly from Taylor Swift on Vimeo.

Am I lame to admit that I legitimately got goosebumps as the fireworks went off as well as when she was playing in the rain. (That really happened, people. Love her!)

Oh, this makes me even more excited for the concert next month! EEEE!!!! ♥

What I Already Know

I love when songs can speak for us, when a songwriter is able to put our thoughts to a melody. Today, I came across this particular song by a relatively unknown artist, and I couldn't help but share it with you. It is an incredible prayer with a great lesson. Enjoy!

The Story of Us

It may not really seem like it, but I promise I am consciously trying to make sure that Beyond Blessed doesn't become a Taylor Swift fan page. However, seeing as how I am a Taylor Swift fan, there are a few indulgences that I simply can't neglect. One of those is posting her new videos. So, here's the video of her latest single, "The Story of Us."

I know what you may be thinking. "Man, she's so beautiful?" Yes. Yes, she is. Furthermore, you may also be thinking, "Didn't she just release a different single, like, only a couple of weeks ago?" And you'd be right again. She's releasing two, simultaneously: "Mean" primarily for Country radio and this one for her Pop music fans. She's just trying to keep us all happy. That's sure is awfully kind of her, huh? ♥

Sidenote: She wrote this song about John Mayer and their post-breakup encounter at the CMT Music Awards, last year. There's a fun little tid bit for ya.

Cicada Invasion 2011

Have the cicadas begun their ruthless dominion where you are?

This is the first time (that I can remember) when Music City, in its entirety, has been constantly simultaneously serenaded by the same musical tune: the rhythmic waves of the cicadas' song. Seriously, they're so loud that we can easily hear them indoors and over all the other random noises of daily life.

Some people are celebrating the fleeting lives of the insects by wearing shirts to honor their once-in-a-13-year-span visit. These people are weird.

The rest of us are frantically joining the "Swat Team" and trying to avoid the plague of red-eyed monsters at all cost.
I've all but succumbed to their temporary takeover. I have no resistance in me, only survival instincts at play. I stay inside and keep the windows shut. All urges to drive with my car windows down in order to enjoy the warm weather have been unceremoniously disregarded due to giant cicadas filling every open crack in the(ir) world. Convertibles are just plain dangerous.

The cicadan buzz, while surprisingly audible, isn't really what bothers me; it simply reminds me of summers of yore, when smaller broods have been around. Instead, it's their overwhelming presence in and of itself. I unashamedly panic when they inevitably dive bomb me on the rare occasions that I subject myself to "their territory" (read: walking to my car from inside, or inside from my car). And the crunchy shells scattered everywhere and attached to everything is super gross. I'm kind of ready to see clear skies again, rather than observing the random flights of thousands of bugs. Ew.

What about you? Are you for or against the 13-year-cicadas? They really do no harm. They don't bite or sting or anything like that. I mean, you could really look at them as a tale of tragic love: they wait over a decade before emerging from their slumber simply to find a mate  and die. Sad and romantic, maybe.

Yeah, maybe if they weren't so creepy...
